Good Reading? You Betcha!

P1010431It is no secret that I love books. From the first time I learned to read—wait—even BEFORE I learned to read I loved books.  My parents both instilled a love of books in me.  My  mom tells the story of one time when a guest was visiting our home and she commented that she was surprised that I was so young and was reading.  Well, what she had seen was me sitting on the steps “reading” a book that had been read to me so often that I had it memorized.  I suspect it was a Dr. Seuss book or Frick and Frack (although I can find nothing online to substantiate that there really was a book about Frick and Frack) but it was a book that I knew cover to cover because it had been read to me so often.

I tried to instill that love of reading with our sons and while the youngest insists that “he does not read” he really does.  He does not sit down with a book like I do but he reads online all the time.  He is not illiterate by any means.  I suspect he says it just to bug me.

There are so many great ways to get books these days.  Libraries are in almost every town and those that don’t have actual buildings may use those nifty Bookmobiles that come on specific days.  Awesomeness on wheels.

I recently found out about a great little thing that exists on Goodreads.  How it took me so long to jump on the Goodreads bandwagon is beyond me but now that I am on it I can’t get off.   Goodreads is a wonderful website where readers can go to connect with other readers and authors and is a place to also keep track of what you are reading yourself.  Once you create a profile you can make bookshelves with different labels to keep track of your books.  I have a little widget on the right side of this blog page that keeps a running list of books I have completed and short summaries and reviews if I choose to write them.

But the best thing is that they do giveaways!!!  If you see a little box that says Explore you can click on the arrow next to that (close to the top right side of the page ) and a drop down list will appear with Giveaways as one of the options. If you click on that it will take you to pages and pages of giveaways that are a great way to explore books that you might want to read but don’t want to buy yet.   I have entered a bunch and have won 4 books in just a couple of months of doing it.  The first one came very quickly and I read The Ogallala Road quickly and learned a lot about something that I knew nothing about before which is always a great thing.  The second book, Downsize With Style,  arrived from Australia this week and I am hoping to get it read this week.  It is another book that looks like a great read and a good thing for me to embrace.  All this for free!

Maybe you have all already been on board with the Goodreads Giveaways for a long time but if not make sure you check it out.  When you get one of these “first reads” it is always helpful to the author to leave a review.  Reviews, especially for self published or independently published authors, are a very important way for authors to get their names out there and for others to find them.  Reviews are a very effective means of advertising and many authors use these Goodreads giveaways to boost readership.

Don’t forget to leave a comment on this post to enter my 6 Year Blogaversary Giveaway where one of the items is a book!  Seems appropriate, doesn’t it??? And while you are at it—-have a Lucky Charms St. Patrick’s Day cookie fresh from the oven.  You can find the recipe by going to SugarPlum Blog.  I made a few changes and they still turned out fabulously.  Enjoy!cookies

  1. Interesting post! I’ll have to check in to this … but I may never get anything else done if I do!! ;)

  2. I came over yesterday afternoon and clicked on your Goodreads and bought A Street Cat Named Bob: And How He Saved My Life. My first book purchased for the new Paperwhite. I loved the book.. :) I need to figure out the Goodreads thing, but I am not a good book reviewer.. :D Enjoy your Monday Beth Ann!

    • Isn’t that book delightful? I only wished there were more pictures of Bob in it but I have started following them on Facebook and there are enough pics there to satisfy me!

      • Beth Ann I had no pictures. I guess the Paperwhite doesn’t do pictures. My Nook really didn’t either. But I am still HAPPY.. I can always google Bob and James. Thanks for the tip to follow them on FB.

  3. Will have to check out good reads. Since I started blogging, I’ve read less and less. I’d like to change that because I know the more I read, the better and more inspired I’ll write. I actually sat down with a couple books last night and it felt good.

    • Goodreads kind fo sucked me in. I didn’t use it for a long time and then they got a widget that actually worked on my blog and that was a great way to keep track. It is fun to meet authors on there and get feedback from other readers.

  4. I still remember the immeasurable delight my husband experienced when he submitted a review on a book he absolutely loved about the Viet Nam conflict. The book was The Cat from Hue by John Laurence, CBS journalist during the conflict from 1965 to 1970. Laurence wrote him a personal e-mail thanking him for the review. He still treasures that e-mail. So much to do and so little time…with the move and all , keeping up with classes and of course, the blog. You are still another person who keeps whispering in my ear all the rewards of Goodreads, tangible and intangible. Keep dripping your book message…you’re a good influence, Beth.

    • Aw—I just love seeing what everyone else is reading.and getting some ideas. I love that your husband got that letter–that is amazing and it really does mean a great deal to the authors, especially the independent ones who are trying to get their names out there. Thanks!

  5. Those cookies look delish! I read incessantly but have never checked out GoodReads. Is sounds like maybe I should look into it. Who doesn’t love a free book? I have also ready many a book and thought of writing a review, but never did for whatever reason. Might have to try that, too. You have inspired me!

    • Well good! Mission accomplished. My reviews are not always all that great or long but I do try to write them and I always write for my friends who are launching books on their own. I have found so many great authors who blog and it is just such a great gift to give them in the way of a simple review.

  6. Goodreads sounds like a must read. Thanks for the tip. And Happy St. Patty’s Day, my friend!

    • You definitely need to check it out—it is such a fun place to spend some time finding new authors and great books as well as the giveaways!

  7. Happy St. Patty’s day to you too. :)

  8. I go in “spells” of reading; right now, I’m in an off spell. Those cookies look yummy!

  9. I love Goodreads and have got some free books there myself. I was “reading” at a very young age as well. I think it was Goldilocks and the 3 Bears I had memorized and people thought I was “reading” at age 3. Your cookies look scrumptious!

  10. Lucky Charm cookies? I’ve never heard of them, but they look yummy.
I, too, love to read. Sadly, since I’ve been playing “catch up” of late, I haven’t had much time for it. My son keeps telling me how many books he’s received FREE on Goodreads, so I guess I’ll have to check that out. I’ve been postponing it because once I start reading, it’s hard for me to get anything else done, ha!

  11. I wondered what you used for the green in your cookies when I saw the photo on Facebook (I think). I used to love Lucky Charms! I probably still do, but don’t buy them.

  12. I’m a huge fan of Goodreads and have been lucky enough to win a few books. It can be addictive though.

  13. We’ve been on Goodreads for years but this is the first I heard about the giveaways! Thanks for posting about this. We are on Shelfari too–I like the discussion groups and bookshelves better there but haven’t participated in the discussion forums for a long time. Just too time-consuming.

  14. I LOVE goodreads. I have been there for 3 years. It is amazing how my book accumulated. My goal is 50 this year. I should of made it higher.. I am already on my 10th!

    • Thanks for sharing! Goodreads is amazing! I am thrilled to see what everyone else is reading, read reviews, quotes, snippets, enter giveaways, support my author friends, etc.!!!! Thanks for stopping by!

  15. Wait. You said you made a few changes to those cookies–what changes??? Besides not turning them green?? WHAT CHANGES?? I have been in Lucky Charms magically delicious cookie hell over here….Books are good. I like books.

  16. I have often entered to get free books on Goodreads & just this week I got an email letting me know I had won a book! I am looking forward to receiving it as I love free books!

  1. […] the crazed leprechaun on the box. I think, I’ll make  Lucky Charm cookies with the last box. Beth Ann made them and they look very St Patrick’s Day Festive. Don’t worry. I won’t go all over […]
