Musings from Texas

Can I just go on record to say that I love Texas?  I love the bigness of it.  I love the food.  I love the people.  I love that politeness reigns everywhere.  I love the "yes, ma'am" and opening doors for people. I love that the people I have encountered here are polite and generous and happy to share with me. My flight was simple and easy---bumped up to first class where this time instead of Drunk Steve as a seat mate I had Quiet Joe who barely even acknowledged my existence until we landed … [Read more...]

You Call It Juglans Cinerea—-I Call it Agony

Anybody out there recognize that picture?  Anyone out there know what that is?  The scientific name is Juglans cinerea but the common name is Butternut.  Not squash although the above picture shows a squashed butternut in the Mason City Public Library parking lot.  It is a type of walnut. It is sometimes referred to as a white walnut.  I refer to it as agony. Why, in heavens name, would I call this simple and seemingly innocent item "agony"?  It doesn't look like it deserves that title at … [Read more...]

Thank You, Farmers! #SpoonSalute and #FranklinCoHarvest Continues!

Disclaimer: The Franklin County Harvest Bloggers Tour was sponsored by the The Franklin County Chamber of Commerce & Franklin County Farm Bureau who provided our lodging, meals and activities. All opinions and thoughts are totally my own. Not that I am … [Read more...]

Teapot Tuesday—Brown with a Case of Splotches

Thrift shops are often a great place to shop for a variety of bargains. I have to admit I have purchased my fair share of teapots in thrift shops and found some fabulous finds.  The teapot featured today came from Affordables here in Mason City.  You might remember that NIVC was one of my Comments for a Cause recipients not too many months ago and they run two Affordables stores here in Mason City.  I am always pleasantly surprised when I find a great buy and can help places like this all in the … [Read more...]

It’s All About Family

I have been very blessed in my life,  I have a wonderful and supportive family.   I married into another fabulous family who always treated me like I had always been a part of their family.  Not everyone can say that that is true for them. I have a multitude of friends who I would also call family.  From church family to work family---I have had so many wonderful relationships that I would classify as family. Not too long ago I added another group to my ever growing family. … [Read more...]

Slightly Savory Saturday—Althea’s Chinese Style Green Beans

Growing up as a PK (preacher's kid) I had the opportunity to be at many church suppers, potlucks and the like.  If you are like me you know that there are always some of the best dishes in the land that come out of these church supper gatherings. I was feeling a little bit of nostalgia when I made this incredibly simple but filling dish this past week as on my handwritten recipe card I saw the name of Althea Carmany next to the recipe name.  Yes---a "church lady" from my childhood and when I … [Read more...]

Franklin County Harvest Bloggers Tour—First Rate Lodging

I hardly know where to start with sharing my past weekend in Franklin County but I decided to start with our lodging for the weekend.  The entire weekend was sponsored and paid for in full by the Franklin County Farm Bureau and Franklin County Tourism . I will be writing many posts about this event and that was an expectation of attending this weekend but I am thrilled to highlight all that we experienced over the weekend.  Trust me---it was a lot of fun.
