Four Years in the Making

We have good intentions, my husband and I.  We often think that we have things all figured out when in reality we have nothing figured out at all. Four years ago found us moving back to our Iowa home from North Queensland, Australia after Chris spent about a year there overseeing the operations of 7 sugar mills.  We had a container coming back and while we had acquired some furniture when we were there we decided to splurge on an outdoor table set to bring back to the US.  We had a … [Read more...]

Some People You Never Forget

I saw a quote today that resonated with me. Our culture has accepted two huge lies.  The first is that if you disagree with someone's lifestyle, you must fear or hate them. The second is that to love someone means you agree with everything they believe or do.  Both are nonsense. You don't have to compromise convictions to be compassionate. ----Rick Warren----- I loved the above quote from Rick Warren and while I imagine it was spurred on because of the current "equality" campaigns I … [Read more...]

A Special Day for a Special Guy

Today is a special day!  It is World Down Syndrome Day 2013 and today I celebrate my brother in law, Carlton!   Carlton is such a joy to our family and over the past several years, especially, I have shared on my blog many things about how Carlton has enriched our lives.   We had the privilege to live with him for about 7 months and it was an adventure beyond my wildest dreams at times but one that I would never trade in the world. One of my favorite things was waking up to his morning … [Read more...]

You Know You Have Missed Them—-Chrisisms Part 6

Can you believe that it has been 4 months since I posted the infamous Chrisisms????  I know that you have all missed them so here are the latest and greatest from my witty husband! "It's amazing what happens when you send a few emails and everyone's travel plans change because of it.  Dance for me, my little puppets!" Chris changed the sheets on the bed when I was gone and he said he could see the Shroud of Beth Ann.... "I may have to work past death."    (What was not said was "if … [Read more...]

Candy Wrappers, Napkins and Banana Peels

Life with an adult with Down Syndrome is interesting.  I always thought I knew my brother in law, Carlton, but until I actually lived with him for 6 months I did not have a clue.  Not that I got it all figured out after 6 months of living with him but I do understand a lot more than I did before and that is a good thing. We had to have some regular maintainance done on the house and so the HVAC guy came to check things out.  Chris mentioned that the upstairs was always really warm and … [Read more...]

Everyone’s a Comedian

I received this Valentine's Day card in the mail from my sister the other day. She thinks she is so funny. Oh she thinks she is soooooo funny.   You see when we were growing up we all had chores to do.  Even though I was the youngest of four  kids I was not exempt from the jobs and had to do my share of them.  One was to clean the bathroom sink.  I can't imagine that the bathroom sink was ever all that dirty but it had to pass inspection by Mother Superior AKA our mother.  Just … [Read more...]

Basketball Anyone?

I love to watch basketball and even if I do not know all of the rules I do love to watch a great competition.  Both of our boys played rec ball growing up and I loved to go watch those games.  Aaron was a scrappy little player and even if he was small he hung in there with the big guys.  One time I remember him hanging onto the ball so tightly that another player actually lifted him up off the floor by holding the ball, too!   Pretty funny stuff and while neither boy went on to play in the … [Read more...]
